According to a 2009 study in in the European Journal of Social Psychology it takes more than two months before a new behavior becomes automatic. 30 days of practice gets you half the way there! Habits are formed by committing to a process, not an event.
What if I can’t come every day during the challenge?
You don’t have to be perfect! Missing practice once or twice will have no impact on your long-term habits. Keep in mind during your 30 day yoga challenge that there is no need to judge yourself if you can’t master a behavior. Remember to give yourself permission to make mistakes, and develop strategies for getting back on track quickly. Embrace the process!
What are some tips for completing the 30 day challenge?
Make a plan: Write down your goal, tell your friends and grab a yoga buddy to help push you to practice on those days you may not feel up to it.
Make your practice a priority: A daily yoga practice only happens if you make it happen. Look at your current daily routine and see what you can eliminate. Can you cut down on social and other screen time? Examine what you are spending your time on each day and prioritize accordingly. Decide ahead of time what you are willing to sacrifice for your yoga practice.
Establish a scheduled routine: Decide which yoga classes you will be attending and what your back-up plan will be when you have to miss class. You’ll be less tempted to skip class if you’ve pre planned for the unexpected need to skip class. Remember to include time to eat prior to practice in your plan so that you aren’t coming to class on an empty stomach.
Set your intention and use it as your guide: Each practice will feel different. You’ll likely find that each day calls for a different intensity of practice. Some days will be good, others may leave you tired and questioning whether you want to go back tomorrow. 30 days will give you ample opportunity to tune in to the needs of your body, mind and spirit.
